Georgia TeenWork gives young people opportunities to build bridges between their experiences in the classroom and their future careers. The program is designed to help prepare youth to respond to business needs and skill demands in the labor market. It is Georgia employers such as yourself (businesses, non-profit organizations and state agencies) that provide the opportunity and resources to allow youth career and vocational exposure. Georgia TeenWork Program pays the hourly compensation ($8.50) of the youth and we match them with your organizations based on your business needs and the youth's area of interest.

To ensure that youth and employers have a great experience, the Georgia TeenWork Program will pre-screen each applicant, match and provide the hourly compensation for the youth.

BENEFITS TO YOUR COMPANY

Georgia TeenWork is seeking employers who are interested in changing a youth's life. Early employment experiences increase the likelihood that youth will finish school, maintain employment and become self-sufficient as adults.

While summer employment, internships and apprenticeships are excellent ways for youth to learn new skills and stay motivated to continue their education, hiring young people also has surprising benefits for companies.

  • Georgia TeenWork matches your organization with youth who meet your stated needs. At no cost to you, the youth are matched based on their qualifications and areas of interest.
  • Georgia TeenWork compensates the youth and provides a Recruitment and Retention Coach to offer continued assistance to both your organization and the youth.
  • Youth are great heroes! They are eager and willing to learn; bring new
ideas and perspectives into the workplace; are enthusiastic, energetic and physically active and are adaptable, open minded and learn quickly.
  • Many youth possess current knowledge and computer skills and are not afraid of technology.
  • Summer internships/jobs are great opportunities for your organization to hire additional staff to assist with jobs, duties and special projects.
  • Your organization can help to shape and tailor the future workforce from the beginning of their professional development.
  • Teens are a major consumer group for many organizations, so hiring teens can help build consumer loyalty.
  • Your participation will help stimulate Georgia's economy.
  • Your organization can make a difference in a youth's life! Together, we are making a collaborative effort to prepare youth to respond to the business needs and the skill demands of the labor market.

    HIRING YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES

Research indicates that to succeed in life and work, all youth, including youth with disabilities, need to develop competence, confidence and obtain real-world experiences. The Georgia TeenWork Program recognizes the importance of including youth with disabilities in service provisions. By connecting schools and youth organizations with employers, these intermediaries leverage resources to help ensure developmentally disabled youth can gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the workforce or higher education.

Georgia TeenWork will advocate for increased opportunities for youth with disabilities to gain work experiences. To enhance opportunities for youth with disabilities, the Georgia TeenWork Program will employ specialized job coaches to support participating youth and employers.

Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that youth with disabilities will have support while enjoying the satisfaction that comes with contributing their skills and knowledge to our local business community.

    CHILD LABOR LAWS

The Child Labor Law exists to protect young people. It restricts employment of children under 16 years of age. Employment certificates are required to ensure that a minor (14-15) is old enough to work and physically able to perform the job. It also ensures that the job will not interfere with their education or place him or her in a hazardous occupation or work environment.

The law also stipulates that authorized work performed by children under age 16, be done between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7, p.m. except for June 1 through Labor Day. On these dates, work is allowed until 9 p.m. Please be sure to read the law in full at Georgia Department of Labor or call (404) 232-3260 or 866-4USA-DOL.
